Scholarship Programs: What We Do

Bro. Michael Muchioki Memorial Scholarship

This award will be given in honor of our deceased brother who was initiated into Iota Rho Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.  This scholarship will be awarded to an undergraduate brother in a chapter being supervised by Alpha Alpha Lambda (AAL). There are presently three undergraduate chapters (Iota Rho, Phi Eta & Phi Theta) that meet this criteria.  


This will be a competitive scholarship with applicants required to complete an essay, secure recommendations and be required to have a 3.0/4.0 GPA or the equivalent among the requirements. Brothers will be allowed to win the award twice. The award is expected to be given annually in the amount of $500, while funds are available.

Marion B. Frederick Scholarship

This scholarship, sponsored and administered by the Alpha Alpha Lambda Scholarship and Educational Fund, is given to (1) graduating, African-American, male attending high school in Essex County, NJ. The total amount of the award is $4,000.00 payable over four years. Recipient will receive (4) equal payments of $1,000 each year upon providing proof of enrollment and transcript showing a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) EACH year, upon matriculating into an accredited baccalaureate program.

All applicants must intend to enroll as a full-time, degree seeking undergraduate at an accredited four-year college/university. Proof of enrollment, transcript and College bill is required for installments to be issued. Minimum high school G.P.A. REQUIREMENT is a 3.0/4.0 or equivalent to apply.

The Application includes (5) requirements:

  1. Application

  2. Headshot Photograph of the Applicant Wearing a Dress Shirt, Tie, and Jacket (Cellular Phone Quality is Okay)

  3. Transcript

  4. (2) Letters of Recommendation (upload during application process or have emailed to scholarship@theaalfoundation.org no later than 5/31)

  5. Essay

Applicants: The application will be rated on clarity, verifiability of information, impact of recommendation letters, and strength of your essay. Incomplete applications will not be considered. An interview may be scheduled with finalists at the discretion of the selection committee.


Application Deadline: All material must be submitted by Friday, March 29, 2024 at 11:59pm(EST). Recipient will be notified shortly following.

Sydney Johnson and
Arthur Williams Scholarships

These $500.00 scholarships are given to two (2) individuals who are majoring in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math heading to a 4-year accredited college or university with at least a 3.0 GPA.


This award is given as part of Essex County College’s Awards program in the spring. Individuals must submit applications through ECC's Division of Student Affairs.
